Kenwood TS-50S ‘Beep’ in receive mode : Fixed!

My TS-50S Transceiver started behaving abnormally recently. After a brief diagnosis I found out that the Part No. J102 was shorting its cloves from inside. Let me share the symptoms and some repair images if you also come across the same issue.

Symptoms

  • A ‘beep’ is heard on LSB/USB modes but does not Transmit.
  • The beep is more prominent and transmits as soon as the radio enters the CW mode.

Quick Fix

  • Plugging in a 3.5mm Mono Plug to the CW Jack fixes the problem

Diagnosis

  • CW Jack (J102) is shorted from the inside. Plugging in a mono jack spreads the internal connectors of J102 preventing the short circuit.

Remedy

  • Replace J102 with a replacement part PJ-307.
